This netsuke was carved from English boxwood in 2016. The subject matter was inspired by autumnal scenes and a developing interest in carvings by the master carver Sukenaga of Takayama. Takayama holds a special significance for myself and my wife and we like to visit there ever time we travel to Japan.
The boxwood is lightly stained and polished and urushi has been used to add an extra element of realism to the chestnut’s shell. A small piece of Boars tusk has been used to depicting the chestnut’s exposed interior. The piece measures 26mm tall by 30mm wide.
